What Is Geng Tan Geng? The Power That Makes Chow Gar Unlike Anything Else
Geng Tan Geng is the defining internal quality of Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis. It does not push. It arrives suddenly, travels inward, and disrupts something structural. Here is what it is and how it is built.
Most martial artists who find their way to Chow Gar come from somewhere else first. Karate, Wing Chun, Taiji, MMA — systems that taught them a great deal, but left one question unanswered: why does the power feel different when a real Chow Gar practitioner makes contact?
One of the most important parts of the answer is Geng Tan Geng.
Shocking experience
Geng Tan Geng is the defining internal quality of Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis. It is sometimes called shock power, sometimes scared power — and if you have ever felt it land on you, you understand immediately why both names fit. It does not push. It does not bruise the surface. It arrives suddenly, travels inward, and disrupts something structural in the person receiving it.
It is not generated by muscle alone. A larger, stronger person does not automatically have more of it. It emerges from a very specific relationship between the body's structure, its connective tissue and tendons, and the ability to release tension in an instant — from zero distance, with no visible wind-up.
This is what separates Chow Gar from systems that develop power through momentum, rotation, or the mass of a full body throw. Those methods require space and time. Geng Tan Geng does not.
Where it comes from
The foundation is Saam Bo Gin — not as a warm-up form, but as a structural training method. Every repetition conditions the body to hold and release force in a very particular way. The stance, Saam Gok Ma, creates the ground connection that makes this possible. Without it, there is nowhere for the power to originate. The legs lock into the earth, the structure loads, and the upper body becomes a conduit rather than a source.
This is why beginners who try to develop Geng Tan Geng by focusing on the hands always miss. The hands are the last thing in the chain. The work happens long before that.
Why most martial artists never develop it
The reason is straightforward: the training required is specific, progressive, and demands correction at the right moments. The internal mechanics of Geng Tan Geng are not visible in the external shape of a movement — which means a student can practice for months with a technically correct-looking structure and still miss the connection entirely.
This is why the quality of instruction matters more than the quantity of material. What makes the difference is not access to more videos — it is a curriculum designed to reveal the right things at the right stage, and feedback that tells you specifically what is wrong before it becomes ingrained. A student training with clear structural guidance and regular correction develops differently from one working through content alone.
This is what transmission means in practice. Not a lineage certificate on a wall — but instruction built around the specific things that are invisible without it.
Geng Tan Geng alongside the other forces
Geng Tan Geng does not exist in isolation. It is the destination of a development arc that begins with Cho Geng — the physical power every practitioner already possesses — and builds progressively through Loi Geng and Um Geng before arriving at Geng Tan Geng. That arc is described in detail in a separate article. What matters here is that Geng Tan Geng is not a shortcut or a separate gift — it is the result of a specific process, done in the right order, over time.
The path forward
If you have trained seriously in other systems and still feel that something fundamental is missing in how your power lands — Geng Tan Geng is likely what you are looking for.
The Awakening Cohort begins July 1, 2026. It is a 10-month guided group working through the first phase of the system with direct instruction, personal feedback, and monthly live sessions. Ten spots. Real progression.
If you want to carry the principle with you, the Geng Tan Geng t-shirt — 驚彈勁 in traditional calligraphy with the 周 seal — is available in the MyChowGar Shop.
