The Role of QiGong in Chow Gar Training — And What It Is Not
QiGong in Chow Gar is not meditation, not breathwork, and not wellness practice. It is a training method with a specific purpose. Here is what it actually does.
# The Role of QiGong in Chow Gar Training — And What It Is Not If you come to Chow Gar expecting QiGong to be slow breathing exercises or a form of moving meditation, the training will probably surprise you. Not because it is harsh or particularly dramatic. But because it has a very specific purpose. In Chow Gar, QiGong is not a separate wellness practice sitting next to the martial curriculum. It is part of the engine that drives the entire system. It exists because techniques alone are not enough. ## Why Does a Fighting System Need QiGong? This is perhaps the most important question. If techniques alone were enough, there would be no reason for generations of Chow Gar practitioners to spend thousands of repetitions on seemingly simple exercises. The reason is simple: **Techniques can only express the qualities that the body already possesses.** If the body cannot connect efficiently, a technique cannot suddenly become connected. If the body cannot generate force, a technique cannot magically create it. If the body collapses under pressure, no amount of technical knowledge will compensate. QiGong exists to change the body itself. It develops qualities that techniques alone cannot build. ## What QiGong Is Not ### It is not meditation. At least not in the conventional sense. Many practitioners eventually find the training deeply calming and focused, but that is a by-product, not the objective. The mind is not trying to empty itself. It is trying to maintain a very specific internal condition. The attention is directed toward structure, connection, and the quality of the body. ### It is not breathwork. Breathing is important. But breathing is not the goal. The breath serves the training. Not the other way around. The way we breathe influences pressure, connection, and internal organization, but simply breathing in a certain way does not create internal power. ### It is not mystical energy cultivation. Perhaps no word creates more confusion than "Qi." People hear the term and often imagine something supernatural, invisible, or impossible to verify. That is not how we approach QiGong in Chow Gar. The qualities developed through training are physical and observable. They can be felt. They can be tested. They either develop or they do not. ## What Does QiGong Actually Develop? The first task of Chow Gar QiGong is not to create power. It is to create connection. Connection between: * the legs and the ground, * the lower and upper body, * the skeleton and connective tissue, * intention and physical action. Without connection, power cannot be transmitted. Once that connection begins to emerge, other qualities can be developed: * structural integrity, * tendon and fascial engagement, * body organization, * pressure, * loading, * and eventually the ability to release force efficiently. This is the foundation of [Geng Tan Geng](/blog/what-is-geng-tan-geng-chow-gar-internal-power). ## Structural Tension vs Muscular Tension This distinction is one of the most difficult things to understand. Most people, when they attempt to become powerful, immediately contract their muscles. They grip. They stiffen. They work harder. Chow Gar QiGong trains something different. It teaches the body to maintain structural tension without collapsing into muscular rigidity. From the outside, this can sometimes look tense. From the inside, the experience is completely different. Over time, the body learns to carry pressure through the structure itself. This is one of the reasons experienced practitioners can generate surprising force without appearing to make a great effort. ## Why Saam Bo Gin Is So Important To many beginners, Saam Bo Gin seems almost too simple. A few movements. A short sequence. Nothing particularly spectacular. Yet it contains the foundation of the entire system. It teaches: * structure, * connection, * pressure, * loading, * release, * and the ability to maintain these qualities while moving. Thousands of repetitions slowly reorganize the body. The purpose is not to memorise movements. The purpose is transformation. The body gradually becomes capable of expressing qualities that were not there before. If you want to begin developing these foundations now, the [Strong Foundation QiGong](/strong-foundation) programme is designed specifically for this stage of training. ## QiGong Changes Throughout the System QiGong in Chow Gar is not something that belongs only to beginners. Nor is it something you finish and leave behind. It evolves throughout the entire curriculum. Early training develops: * awareness, * connection, * and basic loading. Later training refines: * different force qualities, * body organization, * and increasingly sophisticated expressions of [Geng Tan Geng](/blog/what-is-geng-tan-geng-chow-gar-internal-power). Even advanced practitioners continue to deepen these foundations. As my Sifu, Gatekeeper Grandmaster Ip Chee Keung, often reminds us: > "Techniques have an end. Power has no end." QiGong is one of the reasons this statement is true. ## For Practitioners from Other QiGong Backgrounds Practitioners coming from [Tai Chi](/blog/chow-gar-vs-tai-chi-why-internal-power-looks-different-in-a-fighting-system) or health-oriented QiGong often bring valuable qualities: * sensitivity, * patience, * body awareness, * and the ability to perceive subtle changes. These are genuine advantages. What usually needs to be developed is the specific loading and release methodology of Chow Gar. The body must learn to organize force differently. That process takes time. But it is also one of the most rewarding aspects of the system. ## The Real Purpose of QiGong In the end, QiGong in Chow Gar is neither relaxation training nor energy work in the popular sense. It is a method. A method for changing the body. A method for building the qualities that allow techniques to become effective. Because in the end, techniques do not create power. They only express the qualities that training has already built into the body. The [Awakening Cohort](/cohort) begins July 1, 2026, for those who want to experience that process through guided training and personal feedback.
