The Mantis Way – The Turning Point in the Story of Chow Gar

Episode 4 of Chow Gar – The Origins depicts Chow Ah Naam’s encounter with a praying mantis and how that observation set the direction for the development of Chow Gar training.

Episode 4 of Chow Gar – The Origins follows the moment when defeat begins to transform into discovery.

For Chow Ah Naam, losing to Chen Wei was more than a physical defeat.

The fight stayed with him.

His training became difficult. His concentration disappeared. Even during meditation, disturbing images began to appear: a dark forest, a black bird, and something he could not yet understand.

Seeing the change in his student, the abbot sent Chow away from the monastery to spend time alone at a secluded mountain shrine.

And there, according to the traditional story surrounding the origins of Chow Gar, something extraordinary happened. The Mantis and the Bird Walking through the forest, Chow witnessed a small praying mantis confronted by a much larger bird.

The difference in size was enormous.

Yet the mantis did not simply flee.

It remained ready. It waited. And when the moment came, it reacted with extraordinary speed and precision, eventually driving the bird away.

For Chow, the encounter suggested something very different from the fighting methods he had known.

Not greater size.

Not more movement.

Not brute force.

But timing, structure, readiness and decisive action. Observation Was Only the Beginning In our interpretation of the story, Chow takes the mantis back to the shrine and begins studying its behaviour.

He experiments with movement.

He meditates.

But he does not return to the monastery as the master of a completed new system.

He returns with something much more believable and much more important:

a direction.

The ideas still need to be tested through contact, resistance and training.

This is where the role of the abbot and the existing martial knowledge of the monastery become crucial.

Partner exercises begin to test sensitivity and structure. Principles become repeatable methods. Methods become forms. Training gradually develops into something that can be refined, taught and transmitted.

Among those methods, Saam Bo Gin would become one of the foundations of Chow Gar training. A Different Kind of Fight The episode culminates in another trial at the monastery.

First we see skilled practitioners fighting in the familiar Shaolin manner, both empty-handed and with weapons.

Then Chow steps forward.

His confrontation with Chen Wei lasts only moments.

And this time, everyone can see that something has changed.

Even the abbot. Watch Episode 4 – The Mantis Way Chow Gar – The Origins is our cinematic series exploring the traditional stories, ideas and historical context surrounding the development of Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu.
